A salon client wondering why he couldn’t buy his regular product from his regular stylist.

Why, he asked, do I have to go elsewhere for my product. It’s inconvenient, and I’d prefer to support my salon and in particular my guy!

 

My name is Richard Kavanagh, and i’m a hairdresser.

Back in the 90s i was working in a small suburban salon in Auckland, New Zealand and I experienced first hand the incredible power of transformation and how a good hair day can change someone’s entire being.

Over the course of three decades, I’ve been pretty lucky with my career, I’ve met some incredible people, worked on my dream jobs, and had plenty of ‘pinch me’ moments. 

But despite the big international fashion shows, celebrities, magazine covers and editorials, that experience in the salon in 1992 is to this day, the reason I do what I do.

I feel like that’s true for a lot of us, we love making people feel good about themselves, and if you’re like me, then selling and the business stuff, doesn’t necessarily come naturally. 

I know I have to do it, and I’ve learned tools and techniques to help me do it. But I do it because I have to. Not because I want to. And often, I find it doesn’t really come easily or naturally. 

Truth is, often, when I do ‘sell’ I find myself shrinking back a little bit inside, or kinda of just dropping it and running, you know, like, oh and by the way there’s this, but you know, you don’t need to take it all or whatever…  

That client I mentioned at the start of this, the one that wondered why he couldn’t get his Kevin Murphy product from his Redken salon, his name is Richard Matthewman and together, we founded piiq with a simple question we wanted to answer… what if…
